Lytro Light Field Camera Illustration, Make: Vol 38

This Illustration was commissioned for Make: Magazine, Volume 38, and it shows an exploded view of a Lytro camera, including the plenoptic micro lens array that bends light, similar to how an insect's compound eye does, so that the path of light reflecting off of objects can be interpolated by software. This allows the camera to capture an image where the focal length can be changed after the picture has been taken. Unfortunately Lytro the company has gone the way of the Dodo, but it was a very cool idea and a revolutionary product for it's time.

The background color bar simulates the manner in which the plenoptic micro array lens bends light.
To create all of the internal components of the Lytro camera, I created orthographic projections for all of the components. The following image shows the plan views and the axonometric component. Slick.
